Reflexology
Reflexology has evolved from ancient practices of massaging the feet in order to stimulate the body’s own healing processes. Vital life energy runs through the body and when energy flow is hindered by blockages (stress in particular) it can result in inefficient functioning of our physiology. Specific pressure points on the feet, known as reflex points, correspond to all the structures, organs, systems and glands within the body; by working on these points any imbalances of the body’s internal functioning can be detected and treated to restore harmony and equilibrium. Reflexology is a deeply relaxing therapy and has many benefits; it can be used on a regular basis to maintain wellbeing or to help alleviate stress-related conditions. Benefits include soothing the nervous system, boosting energy levels, relieving headaches and tension, rectifying digestive disorders, stimulating the circulation, improving menstrual disorders and relieving insomnia. Because reflexology encourages the body to heal itself, it is recommended that a course of several treatments is undertaken for specific ailments. However, some conditions can be alleviated with just one or two treatments, depending on the nature and severity.
Reflexology is a perfectly safe treatment to have in pregnancy and indeed many midwives recommend it, but it is only advised after the first trimester. Besides helping with unpleasant side-effects of pregnancy such as morning sickness, heartburn, constipation, water retention, exhaustion, leg cramps and anxiety, it may also help to shorten the length of labour and encourage the mother to experience the labour with minimum pain relief.
